Is there a special way to account for casual employees in FlexiTime?
There's nothing specific in FlexiTime to indicate that an employee is casual, however, there are some settings that should be set depending on your employment agreement.
If the employee is paid holiday pay as you go, simply add the Holiday Pay pay code to their Default Pay (this article shows how). This will pay out the holiday pay at each pay and not accrue any annual leave or holiday pay.
If they accrue holiday pay (not pay as you go) set their annual leave to accrue based on Hours Worked as opposed to Normal Hours per Week.
The Holidays Act 2003 provides sick leave entitlements after six months to employees whose employment is not continuous if, during those six months, they have worked for the employer for:
- an average of at least 10 hours per week, including
- at least one hour per week or 40 hours per month.
Employees described as casual would become entitled to sick leave if they meet this test. If the employee does not meet these conditions set the Annual Sick Leave Entitlement to zero.
Casual employees are not automatically enrolled in KiwiSaver. If the employee chooses not to enrol in KiwiSaver clear out the default KiwiSaver enrolment date for the new employee.
